We are sorry to report...

Dorothy BaxterWe are sorry to report that Dorothy Baxter who wrote ‘The One o’ Clock Gun Song’ has passed away.

Written by Dorothy in 1996, the song has been performed by a choir of 170 schoolchildren in the city's Usher Hall.

During the Second World War, Dorothy was stationed at Bletchley Park the U.K.’s  main decryption establishment.

Dorothy originally wrote the song to entertain a group of senior citizens called the Murrayfield Thursday Club. ‘I used to play songs like ‘Dublin’s Fair City’, ‘Old Aberdeen’ and ‘I Belong To Glasgow’ Dorothy recalled during an interview for the Edinburgh ‘Evening News’. ‘I realised that Edinburgh did not have its own song, so I wrote it for the city.’

Dorothy will be sadly missed as she was well known in the town due to the talks she gave on the important work she was engaged in during the Second World War.

Death of James Grant...

James GrantSaturday 5th May marks the anniversary of the death of James Grant.

Born in Edinburgh in 1822, the hard working novelist and historian was commissioned into the 62nd (Wiltshire) Regt. and later joined the 1st Highland Company, Edinburgh Rifle Volunteers.

In addition to histories such as ‘The Memorials of Edinburgh Castle’ and ‘The Clans and Tartans of Scotland’, the best selling author wrote nearly one hundred novels.

A committed nationalist, James Grant founded the National Association for the Vindication of Scottish Rights in 1853.

He created a stir in Parliament when he pointed out that the Union Jack and not the flag of St George should be flown on the Royal Navy’s warships.

When the author of ‘Old and New Edinburgh’ died in 1887 he was buried in Kensal Green Cemetery, London.

We would appreciate it if anyone living near the cemetery could send us a photograph of his headstone as he's not listed on the cemetery’s website.

The work to rig the cable...

Argyle watchtowerThe work to rig the cable connecting the Royal Observatory’s master clock and the time-gun clock standing on the Half Moon Battery began shortly after four o’ clock in the morning on 22nd April 1861.

The Royal Engineers gave permission to set up a windlass and gearing in the Argyle watchtower. The cable contained in a drum was attached to a rope. The riggers consisting of a team of merchant seamen carried the rope to the head of the Mound, through East Princes Street Gardens to the Waverley Bridge.

From the Waverley, the rope was hoisted on to a tenement roof at the foot of the North Bridge, across to the old post office building at Waterloo Place and then to the Nelson Monument, where it was attached to a windlass set up on one of the windows.

The riggers then tightened the rope, raising the cable off the ground, high above the city.

The photograph of the Argyle watchtower was taken by Graeme Magee of Historic Scotland.
